Environmental Policy Statement

Review date: July 2022

1. The Royal Commission is the investigation body and national archive for the historic environment of Wales. It has the lead role in ensuring that Wales’s archaeological, built and maritime heritage is authoritatively recorded, and seeks to promote the understanding and appreciation of this heritage nationally and internationally.

2. We understand that our day-to-day operations have an impact on the environment, arising mainly through the consumption of resources, travel and the generation of waste.

3. We are committed to continual improvement of our environmental performance, reducing our carbon footprint and working towards the goals of sustainable development, which encompass not only the environment, but also the economy, society and our language and culture.

4. The Royal Commission will minimise its adverse environmental impacts by:

  1. Ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental legislation, standards and other compliance obligations;
  2. Managing waste through reduction, re-use and the promotion of recycling;
  3. Promoting and facilitating staff engagement around biodiversity, climate change and environmental sustainability;
  4. Minimising the impact of our energy, water and paper usage on the environment;
  5. Minimising and working towards zero avoidable single-use plastics;
  6. Promoting sustainable transport initiatives and encouraging the use of video and teleconferencing;
  7. Seeking to maintain and enhance biodiversity so far as consistent with the proper exercise of our functions and in so doing promote the resilience of ecosystems;
  8. Embedding sustainability within our procurement procedures;
  9. Raising awareness of climate change and the need for adaptation, collaborating and encouraging collaboration and action across the historic environment sector; and
  10. Establishing environmental objectives and/or targets and report progress on an annual basis.

The Operational Team will review this policy statement on a biannual basis. The reviewed statement will be approved by Commissioners. The next review will be in April 2024.
