Historic Wales

Historic Wales is a web portal that provides access to the records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, National Museum Wales and Cadw. The three organisations are working in partnership to provide an invaluable resource for people interested in learning more about Wales’s rich and varied history. The site already enables simultaneous searching of hundreds of thousands of records relating to archaeological monuments, historic buildings and artefacts.

Historic Wales is a map-based gateway that allows the user to view information from one or more databases. The information is displayed as locational dots on a mapping background. Selecting a locational dot for a site on the map displays the detailed information each database related to that site. Selecting a group of sites displays information from all the relevant databases in separate lists.

The website provides a wealth of information for professional heritage managers and everyone interested in their local history or the heritage of the place they are visiting. With just a click of the mouse you can uncover the history of Wales through these extensive records and archaeological collections.

The Historic Wales portal is co-ordinated and made available by the Royal Commission on behalf of the participating organisations. It is a free public service which is being continuously developed and expanded and it is hoped that other databases will be added in the future.
