Join us for this year’s Eisteddfod AmGen July 31—August 7
We will once again be joining our partners in the heritage sector to celebrate this year’s Eisteddfod AmGen online through the Y Lle Hanes Facebook page. A full programme of events hosted by us, together with Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, Cadw, and Peoples Collection Wales, is currently being finalised. This year, we are delighted to be joined by the World Heritage Site partnership for the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales, who we will be supporting on Tuesday 3 August. Each partner will be responsible for different days during the festival, and on Friday 6 August the Commission will be hosting a number of talks and exhibitions. These will include:
- Twenty Sites of the Twentieth Century – an illustrated talk by Dr Meilyr Powel, from the Royal Commission, which will explore the richness, diversity and importance of Wales’s twentieth-century built heritage. To find out more about this talk, read Meilyr’s recent blog. This talk will be available from 10am on Friday, 6 August on Y Lle Hanes Facebook page.
- Wallpaintings from St Teilo’s Church, Llandeilo Tal-y-bont: rescuing, researching and re-creating medieval wallpaintings at St Fagans – an illustrated talk by Gerallt Nash (former Senior Curator, Historic Buildings at St Fagans National Museum of History) together with Dafydd Wiliam, the current Principal Curator (Historic Buildings). The recreation of the medieval church of St Teilo’s at St Fagans with its wallpaintings and rood-screen is an outstanding example of conservation in action that has delighted thousands of visitors to the National Museum of History. St Teilo’s Church is one of the case studies in the Royal Commission’s forthcoming book on Wallpaintings and Rood-screens in Welsh Churches, 1200–1800 by Richard Suggett, Senior Investigator at the Royal Commission, to be published this autumn. This talk will be available from 12pm Friday, 6 August on Y Lle Hanes Facebook page.
- Wallpaintings in Welsh Churches – an online exhibition showcasing some of the striking images from our forthcoming book, Painted Temples: Wallpaintings and Rood-screens in Welsh Churches, 1200–1800, to be published this autumn. This will be a bilingual exhibition and available from 9am Friday, 6 August on Y Lle Hanes Facebook page.
- Welsh Slate. Exploring the Slate Landscapes of Wales – an online exhibition of iconic images which illustrate the story of slate in Wales – from the quarries which produced the slate to roof the world to the culture and communities which evolved from this complex and fascinating industry. This bilingual exhibition supporting the nomination for World Heritage status of the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales will be available from 9am Tuesday, 3 August on Y Lle Hanes Facebook page.
**Please note that following Eisteddfod conventions, talks will be given in Welsh (with no simultaneous translation) but all exhibitions will be bilingual.**
