Can you spare five minutes to complete our questionnaire, designed to help us respond better to the needs of our users?
We are currently collecting information about the public’s use of the List of Historic Place Names of Wales, an innovative resource that contains hundreds of thousands of place names collected from historic maps and other sources. Drawing upon existing place name research, the List includes the various names and spellings used to denote settlements, buildings, fields, and landscape features in Wales, and provides a fascinating insight into the land-use, archaeology and history of Wales. This is a living list, compiled and maintained by the Commission, which continues to grow and develop as new research becomes available. Indeed, 23,000 new names were added last year alone. This list was begun in 2016 in response to the statutory requirement of Welsh Government to maintain a List of Welsh Place Names under Section 34 of the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016. We undertake this work in partnership with a range of other organisations including Cadw, the Welsh Archaeological Trusts, the National Library of Wales, and the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies. This List has now been running for over five years and includes 692,743 historic place names.
