RCAHMW Achieves National Accreditation

The National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW) has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation.

Accredited Archive Services ensure the long-term collection, preservation and accessibility of our archive heritage. Accreditation is the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. Achieving accredited status demonstrates that the NMRW has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing; the care of its unique collections and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

The NMRW holds the national collection of information about the historic environment of Wales from the earliest times to the present day. It includes almost two million photographs, and many thousands of drawings, surveys, reports and maps. The records are produced through RCAHMW’s own survey and investigation work, or are collected from a host of external producers, including other bodies working in the field of Welsh heritage, academic and commercial sources, and donations by private individuals.

Gareth Edwards, RCAHMW’s head of Knowledge and Understanding, commented: “Accreditation is an important step forward for us as a national collection, and is a testament to the quality of our service and new accommodation. It also focusses our work on continual development and improvement.”

The Archive Service Accreditation Panel particularly commended “….the pioneering approach to digital services and mainstreaming of digital collecting which was a model of engagement with stakeholders and collections. The Panel also appreciated the thoughtful and extensive efforts to open up the potential of collections to wide audiences across Wales….”
