The Royal Commission’s Library is an open access reference library that directly complements our archive collections.
It covers all aspects of Welsh archaeology, architecture, history, maritime archaeology, topography and cartography, planning legislation and historic environment strategy, while texts covering wider geographic areas provide context. Holdings are particularly strong on the subject areas of prehistory, Roman Britain, Welsh nonconformity, Welsh topography, vernacular architecture and industrial archaeology.
The library collects the current county historical journals for Wales, as well as relevant specialist archaeological, architectural and historical periodicals.
Due to ongoing lawful industrial action by Prospect Union members at the Royal Commission, the Library and Enquiry Service will offer a reduced service from 31 May 2023. The RCAHMW Library and Search Room will no longer be open on Thursdays and may experience further periodic disruptions to opening times. We will temporarily be suspending our priority enquiry service and may experience delays in responding to enquiries beyond our usual fifteen working day timeframe. Thank you very much for your understanding.
We are open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 – 16:00, Wednesday 10:30-16:30
