Research and Recording

The Survey and Investigation Team of the Royal Commission are responsible for providing authoritative information on the heritage of Wales, both on land and within Welsh waters.  Our work concentrates particularly on under-represented and under-recognised elements of our heritage, together with those features of national or regional importance. The results of our work are disseminated widely through a range of media, including the online database Coflein, books and publications, and exhibitions.

Our work includes thematic or area-based projects, pan-Wales programmes of reconnaissaince and database enhancement, and detailed studies of individual sites and buildings. We provide professional advice to others in the heritage sector, and aim to develop and expand approaches to recording, interpretation and heritage presentation through the continuing development of techniques such as digital survey, dendrochronology, aerial and maritime reconnaissance, and events such as Digital Past conference.

We welcome the opportunity to work in partnership, with local authorities, universities, conservation bodies, and voluntary and community groups for example.
