Tracing the Past: A Digital Analysis of the North Transept and Chancel Vaults at Nantwich St Mary’s Church

The Tracing the Past project is an interdisciplinary project within Liverpool University aimed at further understanding the design and construction of medieval vault design in the British Isles using up to date digital techniques. One of the main objectives of the project is to assess the range of survey and modelling techniques now available, and evaluate their ability to further inform our understanding of how complex historic buildings were constructed.

At Digital Past 2017 Dr Nick Webb, architect and lecturer at the Liverpool School of Architecture, will discuss the project in relation to the case study of St Mary’s Church, Nantwich. Here, a combination of completed and uncompleted vaults provides varying levels of evidence to trial comparative methods of reverse engineering, testing hypotheses regarding the design and construction process.
