The Royal Commission holds information on tens of thousands of ancient and historic monuments throughout Wales, each with its own individual entry in our online inventory, Coflein. These entries record the type of site, its location, related images and archival holdings, and a short description of the site and its history. This makes Coflein a convenient place to discover information about Wales’s rich built environment.

The enhancement of site descriptions has been the focus of ongoing work which aims to ensure that entries are as informative and accurate as possible. This work has recently been highlighted in a new gallery on Coflein, showing some of the enhancements made during Spring 2018. From a medieval parish church in the middle of a firing range to the offices of the Heritage Lottery Fund in downtown Cardiff, the gallery showcases the wide range of sites examined by the Royal Commission. The gallery also features several public houses and hotels, such as the Cambrian Hotel in Borth, Ceredigion. This served as a refuge for evacuated children during the Second World War before being presented to the Urdd Gobaith Cymru in 1947.

We hope that this gallery will be the first of several, showcasing the ongoing enhancement of site descriptions on Coflein in the coming months. If you notice any information in need of improvement or correction, please do not hesitate to contact us through the ‘Feedback’ tab on Coflein.
